Thirteen Great Herbs for Your Windowsill
Before selecting the herbs to grow on your windowsill, you may want to create several different gardens for specific uses. For example, consider these special arrangements:
• For a culinary herb garden to provide seasonings for meals, try growing basil, chives, cilantro, dill, marjoram, mint, oregano, and rosemary.
• For a medicinal herb garden for homeopathic healing, try growing chamomile, bergamot, aloe vera, lavender, catnip, comfrey, parsley, and St. John’s wort.
• For a cosmetic herb garden for natural lotions, bath oils, perfumes, and astringents, try growing lavender, feverfew, lemon balm, lemon verbena, and chamomile.
• For a tea garden for making natural, organic beverages, try growing mint, chamomile, lemon balm, lemon verbena, tarragon, anise, and cardamom.
• For a fragrance garden for making potpourri, sachets, nosegays, and wreaths, try growing mint, lavender, basil, angelica, lemon balm, rosemary, sage, and myrtle.
Even if you do not intend to use herbs for medicinal or culinary purposes, many of the following herbs have foliage that provides fragrance and decorative form to your garden. You will find that most of these herbs also have pollen-producing flowers that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. They may not be able to get through the window to actually land on your plants, but you may see a visitor or two trying to get a “taste” of your windowsill herb garden.
